I am trying to help a friend with a computer and I am not
very good at it. But I would like to ask. It blue screens
at start up saying registry error. I can not get it to
start in the safe mode or the last known good config same
blue screen error. The only thing I would know to do to it
now is to format and reinstall. Would that be correct?

Depending on the specific error, it could be possible to recover. However,
if you or you friend do not free comfortable performing the necessary
steps -- then yes, reformatting and reloading is the easiest way to go.

First step would be to boot to the Win XP cd and try a repair. You might have to enter setup first to set the cd drive as the first boot device. Look up Recovery Console in Help for more.

Thanks, Michael and Mary

If you post the exact text of the error message, there is a good chance
someone on this newsgroup can give you an exact fix for the problem.

Try booting into safe mode with command prompt. If you can get in that
way then do a system restore from the command line:

C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
then press Enter

If it won't boot into safe mode with command prompt then you might need
to try a repair install. This should preserve the data and programs
however things can go wrong. If there is data on the drive he can't
loose, one option is to first put it in another XP system as a slave
drive and try copying the data. Then do the repair install from the
original system.

Good luck.

Thank all of you. I will study all the info. I told the
guy I would try to do something with it tomorrow we just
found the operating system restore disk it is a Dell
machine. It is too late to start tonight. 10:42 pm
