Win Xp x64 with 8GB RAM

In systems like Windows 2003 Server with 4GB of RAM in the box, 2GB was for
user process and the other 2GB was reserved for OS use.

With Win XP64 can I adjust the memory "marker" to give the apps, say, 5GB
of RAM, leaving the OS 3GB? Or is that line not user configurable?

Just remember, regardless of how you adjust the memory in the OS, the
application also must be able to make use of those adjustments made in the
OS. An example, most think adding the 3GB switch will give 3GB to apps and
1GB to the OS, what in reality it will do, is make 3GB available to apps and
limit the OS to 1GB, but if it is a typical 32-bit app, it wasn't written or
compiled to make use of more than 2GB, so there you've actually wasted 1GB
of memory. Bottom line, you have to know you apps capabilities before
messing around tweaking the OS to give apps more memory.
