Two things can be done.

In Windows Update, click in the left panel on Windows Update Catalog

In that take 'Updates for Operating Systems'
Then select Windows SP1

{if you don't have SP1 available separately and have a broadband
connection it would be better to get the full 'Network' download from
the SP1 page rather than getting all the fixes to Windows XP RTM
separately
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default..asp}

You can then select individual critical updates and add then to a basket
to download and save.

For the non-critical 'recommended' ones, which do not appear in this way
the best suggestion I can make is to empty Temporary internet files (for
convenience) before getting each in the regular course of things: when
it has downloaded and installed, copy the downloaded .exe file out of
the TIF folder

You have to enable Windows Update Catalog first by going to "Customise
Windows Update"
