win xp turns off computer while installing

having problems installing Windows XP, will start up,
format hard drive, copy files over, and after that first
restart, when you see the xp logo for the first time, it
jumps to another screen where it says, system restarting,
and then the computer freezes, monitor turns off, keyboard
locks, everything. Ive gotten win 98 to run, and tried
upgrading, same thing happens every time it gets to
initializing setup or something, right before it is going
to copy the files. help please!!!

Copy the i386 folder from the CD to the hard drive, and run winnt32.exe from there.
