I'm so sorry but this is not enough information for us to help you. You've
told us nothing about your computer and its recent history. These links
will show you what details to include in your next post in order to get the

your options may
be very limited.

you should try to
borrow any windows
cd and access the
recovery console.

at the disk prompt
you can run the
disk commands>:

chkdsk
fixboot

then type exit
and reboot without
a cd.

there is more info
under command console
section:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

--------------------

if you have no cd,
then maybe none
was provided as
most computers
come with a hidden
partition with the
windows restoration
files.

if you have the above
then this will restore
your computer to its
original factory state,
which will result in lost
of all your data, personal
files.

you can check with the
computers homesite for
faq for help on an issue
like yours.

ive lost my xp pro disc and  computer wont start.it starts me in the screen
giving me the option to start in safe mode etc.

This suggests it gets past the BIOS
no matter which one i choose
it goes back to password page then repeats

Is this the password for a User Account?
Such a thing comes in 2 forms..
Do you have to click a user, and enter a password?
Do you have to type a username and type a password?

That way I know that it is that screen,

This paragraph is not really for you...
Next step, which I will tersely summarise -so not for you. Just so
people know where this is going. You will prob need some help with
from here, is to find a user/pass that gets in, get in as an
administrative user(try Administrator:blank), then reset the
password.. Or, Boot up peter nordahl's thing and reset the passwords.

I couldn't violently disagree more. In what you said, and in the
general philosophy you have espoused..

I think she described the problem .. just needs a bit more
description.

Your list amounts to "You tell me everything about your computer
regardless, and I will solve it for you"
That also can make a thread only relevant to one person's computer.

Your list asks "What version of XP"
Well.. Suppose it is pre sp1. sp1. sp2.
What difference does that make if she is stuck at a password screen?

Your list asks for Approximate Age.
What difference does that make?

She said she doesn't have the Win XP CD BTW..
You ask for make/model.
That is really irrelevant, unless she wants to reinstall windows from
the manufacturer's CD.

Your list asks for Recent History of the machine.
Of course, it's good to find what triggered it..To understand the
problem. Since that can help solve it.
But from her description, she is stuck at a password screen. So I
would just try to get past that, that seems to be what she wants.

Your list asks for what error message she gets.. This is good, as one
can often Google an error message. But not that relevant in this case.
She is stuck at a password screen.. So the thing to know, is what
password screen, and the obvious and almost the only candidate, is
windows user account. So I just asked her to describe the screen.. to
see.

Pretty much every point listed on your sheet is irrelevant..
And it amounts to the idea of. You tell me all the information
absolutely everything, about your machine, and I will solve it for
you. And so the thread is no use to anybody else.

Much better, to say
IF this is the problem, then do this. So YOU(kimberly) can check if
that is the problem, this is how you check e.t.c..
Alot of problems are generic.. And the solution is not relevant to
what specific model a computer is.
With your method, all analysis is hidden
This happens on malware forums too, when they say "Send me the
HijackThis log". Or on one networking newsgroup I saw, where they
would say "Post all ipconfig /all, and browstat" and stuff.

your options may
be very limited.

Her options are not limited.. Yours are if you can only type with less
than 5 or 6 words per line.
you should try to
borrow any windows
cd and access the
recovery console.

She may need to a win xp cd, but it doesn't look like it at all, from
her description.. I would suggest she gets one at least for the future
though. Incase she need to reinstall for example.

You mention the recovery console, and it requiring a Win XP CD. (she
said she didn't have one)
I don't see why she needs the recovery console.. She said she is stuck
at a password screen. But if she did.
And if you don't have a win xp cd , and if like most you have not
installed the recovery console option(one way of not later needing a
cd to get to it)
There is still another way you can get to the recovery console.. I
once downloaded a set of 6 floppy disks, they got me there. I had a
boot problem after a user had a powercut, I ran the 3 classic
commands, one of them fixed it.

if the o.p. stated
that the windows
setup floppies were
not found, then
you response would
have some legitimacy.

in the future, if you
have suggestions or
opinions provide them
to the o.p. who is
asking for them.
