WIN XP PRO What Processes should be running????

When I go to Task Manager I count 44 processes, even though in the Start up
under MSConfig I have only allowed only a very minimum of programs to start.

What should I do since I assume that that many processes slow down the
computer, an HP AMD 4400+

44 is in the normal range of running processes.

What would be abnormal is a single process
(except for the "System Idle Process") using most
of your CPU (by percentage) when you are not
running/using any applications. The only possible
exception would be your AV software running a
"background" of "Full" scan.

That seems about normal if you ask me. I have 39 processes running.. some of
those are things I put in there, so really I can get rid of them if I want
and have about 33 running.

SysInternals Process Explorer is nice. It'll show you a lot more
information.

If you're worried about the

That number is by no means excessive. You should wait until you have a
performance problem too solve.

Messing with services can be a fools game. After you have disabled some
then a day or so later you will be asking why you cannot get something
to work!

You may help system performance by changing programmes from starting
during the boot process to loading on demand. Minimising multi-tasking
will help. Putting shortcuts like Show Desktop, Internet Explorer,
Outlook Express and Windows Explorer in the Quick Launch Tray may help
to encourage you to close these applications after use as it is easy to
reopen them when required.

Minimising the use of Add-Ons with Internet Explorer will help.

Avoid seciuity software which generates excessive demands for memory.
McAfee and Norton products are notably among those to be avoided.

Avoid using facilities which run in the background when they can be run
when the computer is not being used. An example is Diskeeper which can
continuously defragment when it can be set to run on demand.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to all of you who responded. I feel a lot better that that many
"processes" are "normal". None show any CPU usage ezcept system idle, which
shows between 97 and 99% without any application open other than this
newsgroup under Windows Live Mail.

I never heard of SysInternals Process Explorer. Where can I download that?
Is it free?
