Win XP Pro Problem - processes aborting prematurely

I have simple programs like msconfig and less simple
programs like Norton anti Virus "cutting" out in the
middle of processing in Win XP Pro. For example, I'll
launch live update and after 4 seconds the program closes
out and stops processing...same thing with msconfig...the
GUI just stops and goes away and entry in task manager
disappears..I checked for compatability issues...e.i.
making sure that its turned off....

You say you have NAV, and apparently it is up-to-date. Try running NAV
in Safe Mode and see what you get. If the computer is clean, then post
back.
