Win XP Pro Startup Problem

Hi,

I'm experiencing a strange behavior in Win XP Pro SP3 where the "Windows is
starting up" Welcome screen is not displayed anymore. Between the black
background screen that shows Windows booting and the Login screen display,
the screen goes black for the duration with the mouse icon getting displayed
at some point during that phase. What's more worrysome is that if I schedule
a disk drive for Check Disk, which is supposed to occur the next time Windows
is restarted, the status is not displayed, and I even doubt that it is
occuring as I cannot see what's going on, and it seems to skip by faster than
it should normally take.

What can I do to get that Welcome screen to be displayed again? My guess is
that it happened during eitehr a Windows update or a program install
operation.

Thanks

Rich,

I downloaded and ran TweakUI but there is no option in it for the Welcome
screen. In which item in the menu tree should it be located?

Thanks

I hadnt been there in awhile. Click on About>Policy>Group Policy
Editor>Under Computer Configuration click on Admin Templates>\ click System
folder>then Logon folder. You should see the setting in the rt pane.

Still no luck, Rich. The option was set at the default of "Not Configured".
Since the option is: "Don't display the Getting Started welcome screen at
logon", I set it to disabled and got the same result. BTW, if I boot into
Safe Mode, I get the scrolling display of the OS and drviers being loaded,
this list remains on the screen until I get the logon screen prompting me
for my password. Still no Welcome screen.

Also, the Explain tab states that I can also turn on the Welcome screen
display via Start Menu|Accessoroes|System Tools|Getting Started or typing
welcome at the Start Menu|Run... command. The Getting Started option is not
available as stated above, and the Run...Welcome yields a Not found error.
Also, in TweakUI, a note at the bottom of the Setting tab indicates that
this is only for Win 2000 even though the Explain tab states otherwise.

Any other thoughts? And thanks again for helping me out.
