Hello.

Recently we purchased a computer that came with a WIN XP
PRO OEM CD that had SP2 already. Currently we dont use
SP2 so I took a XP CD that was an XP PRO UPGRADE CD and
then when it asked me for the CDKEY I tried to enter the
License key that came with the WINXP SP2 OEM disk...it
does not work.

Any way around this?

I dont want to install SP2. And when I had the OEM
version installed it automatically installed SP2 and there
was no way to remove it.

Any suggestions?

The reason I dont use the UPGRADE CDKEY is because it is
already in use.

thanks

No. You cannnot use an OEM product key with an Upgrade CD.

You have no choice other than using SP2 or buying another copy
without it.

By the way, you *should* use SP2, as far as I'm concerned.

the keys only work with the exact windows version , you
can't use keys for OEM version with upgrade version ,
its got to be the exact same type of windows , retail for
retail version and upgrade for upgrade version , get the
picture ??

No, none.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full
version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with
an English CD.

Bottom line: Product Keys and CDs cannot be mixed & matched. You
have to have the specific type of installation CD for which that
license and Product Key was designed.

If you don't wish to use the OEM license that you purchased along
with the new computer, simply buy a retail license for the version of
Windows, or any other OS, you prefer.
The reason I dont use the UPGRADE CDKEY is because it is
already in use.

A commendable attitude, as using the livcense on two machines
simultaneously would be illegal in most locations.

Agreed. And most all the troubles people have with it arise from
installing it over untidy, corrupted systems. A fresh install using a
CD with it integrated should give no trouble
