Win XP PC locks up printing to Win2000 PC

Michael Bentfeld

Hello,

I have a laptop PC running Windows XP Professional. My
default printer is a shared printer (HP LaserJet 1000)
hooked up to a desktop PC running Windows 2000
Professional. When I connected to the printer initially,
everything went OK, including printing test pages. But
now, whenever I do regular print jobs, the computer locks
up at least half of the time. When I go to the Printers
screen, the printer's status shows as "Opening" instead
of "Ready". On the host PC, the print queue shows the
stalled print jobs as "Spooling," but the print jobs never
print. Could there be a problem by having different
operating systems on the client PC and the host PC? I'll
be grateful for any assistance anyone can provide.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

I don't think that there is a problem with an incompatibility in operating
systems

The first thing that you should try is clearing the Spooler folder of any
corrupt jobs that may exist.
- Delete the *.spl and *.shd files in %Systemroot%\System32\Spool\Printers
- Restart the spooler service
If not, deleting the printer from the XP machine and reinstalling it.

Let me know if any of this helps.

Jason,

I tried all of your suggestions. Unfortunately, the
problem still persists.

Hmm....
You might want to run "sfc /scannow" from the command-line on both
machines, just to make sure that the spooler files are not damaged

Hmmm.....Maybe there is a port monitor that is to blame
Check the following registry key for third-party monitors. Remove any
non-default monitors:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
The default port monitors are:
- AppleTalk Printing Devices (When Services for Macintosh is installed)
- BJ Language Monitor
- Local Port
- PJL Language Monitor
- Standard TCP/IP Port
- USB Monitor
- Windows NT Fax Monitor (when applicable)
