Win XP has as one of its choices, computers connected
directly to the internet through a hub. It says Windows
does not recommend this setup. Fine. I installed a router
that the PC's connect to, that sits between the PC's and
the cable modem. There is no choice for this in XP Home
Network Setup Wizard. I cannot share files and printer.
Any recommendations?

That choice is known as a "residential gateway" in M$speak.

The Wizard calls the router a "residential gateway". Specify that
option.

If you say "hub", the Wizard enables XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall, which blocks file and printer sharing.
