Win XP Logon, User list empty

Hi, when I start my Desktop now i find that the logon screen does not display
any users! So I am unable to start XP. I have tried safe mode, tried repair
from the XP disc, but the same error occurs. I have been using remote desktop
a lot from my wireless connected laptop.
How can i get into Windows to sort my user list.

When you first turn on the PC press CRTL ALD DEL a few times. A box with a
spot for Username and Pass will appear. Type in your Username/Password and
hit OK. If that does not work try Administrator Acct or another user.

Boot into safe mode (log in as the administrator) and try a system
restore.Does that help?
You can also do the following in the safe mode:-
Start>Run>type in:"control userpasswords2"(without quotes)>ok
where you can select any account name and Reset Password.
Once back to a normal boot in some account, you can Use TweakUI.

Start>All Programs>Powertoys>Tweak UI.It's Logon page to check which
accounts to 'show on Welcome screen'

Hi, yea, starting safe mode with command prompt brings up the log on screen
with still no user name. To get round, I've reinstalled Windows!
What a perfect end to a shi..y day
