Win XP Loading Error

Is there anything specific to look for when Win XP Pro does not complete
loading the first (or sometimes the second) time when the computer boots?
Frequently it will get to the first XP screen (the black one where the little
dots are shifting to the right) and then 'sticks.' Generally forcing the
computer off and restarting will cause a complete load, but I live in fear of
something dreadful happening one day. Anyone with experience in this
particular situation?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Thanks much for your detailed reply. I was not aware of the Event
Viewer utility at all, and want to read the suggested KB article. A quick
check did show items in question. A similar check of Device Manager showed
no problems.
Right now I'm running a 'deep' scan for Trojans, but will get back to
this when it's finished.
In your tip for posting copies of error reports (and perhaps this will
be covered in the cited KB), who gets these and will sending them get direct
help?

Error Reports are normally automatically sent to Microsoft but you can
turn this feature off. If you did not know this it sugests they are not
being sent from your machine. Otherwise if you post copies to this
newsgroup there are a number of persons like myself who use them to
diagnose the cause of reported problems.
