win xp hotfix patches and disk space

hi this is going to sound like a stupid question...actually two questions...I have several older win xp hotfixes for sp 1 on my computer....lately my hard disk has gone down to 60%, even though I've deleted several programs and gone thru a defrag and disk cleanup. I was wondering if those older win xp hotfixes were the culprit and should I delete them to make more space on my hard disk?

Not asking a question when you need to know the answer would be stupid,
so please don't worry about your post. Lots of people here are glad to
help you. No, don't delete the hotfixes. Rather, do the normal Windows
troubleshooting:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. You may also want to run the latest
CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html. Always
read the instructions before running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to
update these programs before running, and it is a good idea to do
virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting
with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for services info and
www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs info; 5) look in
Event Viewer for clues; 6) make sure you've visited Windows Update and
applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from
Windows Update; 7) run a firewall.

northneckva,

I wouldn’t touch xp hotfixes.
Can tell you from my personal experience that hard drives are usually eaten by:
1. System Restore
2. Hibernation
3. Temp folder
4. Temporary Internet Files folder
To fix first two you would need to disable the corresponding features.
For the last two see here:

How to optimize Windows XP for the best performance:

Good Luck!

usually the culprit, unless you are doing backups to the
drive in which case you may have many sets of backups
hogging the disk space.

Hi,
In WinXp and Program Files stupid never used pictures and
*.html's eat upto to 80 MB. Clean they. Use Search
for "Pictures, Musics and Video" and delete they without
any negative results.
I pesonally, on one my old laptop with 3.2 GB HDD, use
WinXp, Office2003, Linux, and upto 450 MB programs, and
Linux, and 700 MB my music, and keep WinXP in 400 MB size.

Best, Alex
