WIN XP has to be shutdown twice

After a hardware upgrade (M/B CPU) As usual I was forced
to do a full reinstall of XP before the system would boot.
No problems it seemed until time for shutdown. I have to
go through the whole thing twice. On first shutdown it
very slowly shuts down all runing progs (the auto started
ones)however this never completes I waited almost 12 hours
just to make sure. While in this state you can restart
any application or run any program and they all work as if
the system was not "shutting down"

However if I shut down and repeat things shutdown as they
should and no problem???

Check in your device manager for any problem drivers
which may need to be updated. Also look in the Event
Viewer, in Administrative Tools in the control panel for
error or warning messages.

Thanks but did all that....No errors all devices are happy
according to XP all drivers were signed and everything was
hunkeydory before the upgrade... I am playing with the
idea of loading it all again and having another fight with
MS to get it registered ...again

Note the difference between Registration (which is entirely voluntary) and
Activation (which is required to use WinXP).

My Mistake I should have said activation,

M/S requires an activation at every reinstall or large
change ... I am always making changes and have had to go
through this ACTIVATION process many times in the past
three years, I find it quite a tedious thing and often
takes more than a hour on the Phone.

I have not made a study of shutdown problems. A thought which occurs to me
is what happens if you experiment using Process Explorer shutting down
processes progressively and observing whether any encounter problems might
give a clue. You could also see whether shutting down particular processes
affect shutdown times after you select Start, Turn Off Computer etc.

Event Viewer provides Information as well as Error Reports. Compare those in
one section with those in others. Look at the timing as they could indicate
an area for further investigation.

Identifying the precise cause of a problem is frequently not easy.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the operating system often is not the solution
and can introduce new problems. Many problems arise out of a conflict of
components be they software or hardware and uninstalling and reinstalling
can leave the potential for conflict untouched.

You need clues for researching Google and the like. Someone out there has
had the same problem.
