i haven't been able to get my dell inspiron 5100/win xp machine to stand by or hibernate--it hangs in the blue screen 'preparing to stand by' and i have to force power down... this seems to be happening in streaks--it will work fine for a while and then consistently i am unable to get it to hibernate. i haven't gotten any error messages about port or driver errors/incompatibilites and i've struck out trying to find successful solutions online through microsoft or others. any suggestions??

much thanks

I had the same problem some time back. It turned out to be a conflict in the
power management settings - I'm trying to remember - something about an
"always on" system power profile interrupting the manual standby command.
Check your power management setting.
