Win XP hangs/freezes after clicking on Turn Off button

I am using Windows XP operating system and have had this computer for less
than half a year and am already experiencing problems with shutting it down.

Whenever i click on the Turn Off computer button from the Start menu, the
computer often freezes. I have noticed this happens more often if i have been
using the computer for a long period of time.

I then resolve to using Ctrl + Alt + Delete to bring up the Windows Task
Manager. However, when trying to shut down the computer from there, it does
not respond.

Sometimes, it does respond but just when everything seems to be working and
the message saying 'Windows is now shutting down...' is displayed, it will
hang there and never actually physically shut down.

I have to then resolve to holding the On button for 5 seconds to shut down
the computer, which i have heard... is not a very good way to shut down.

Please note: The same problem occurs with the Log Off button

I have visited the given website and although it provided a lot of
information and solutions, the main problem now is accessing the Windows
Update service which doesn't seem to be working.

I am constantly recieving the 0x80248011 error message. I have searched for
solutions to this problem on other discussion boards where people are having
the same problems, but the replies given to those people doesn't seem to work
for me.
(That is emptying the internet cache and history records and typing command
prompts in the Run box, which by the way doesn't really solve the problem).

Hey, everythings sorted out now. Turns out there was something wrong with the
data storage which prevented me from accessing the Windows Update service,
and after installing all the critical updates, the Shut Down problem has not
occured very often since. Thanks for the help anyway!
