WIN XP CRASH

I purchased a WIN XP PRO upgrade for my WIN 98SE. It
worked well for about a week and then my hard drive
crashed. I was told I could not reinstall WIN XP PRO on
my new hard drive unless I get an ok from Microsoft. Can
Someone give me information on this. I'm not a computer
expert so I need basic information. Lambert

You were misinformed.

Boot your computer off the Win XP Pro upgrade CDROM. (You may need to go
into your BIOS to arrange this.)
At some point you will be asked to insert your Win98se CDROM to prove you
qualify for the upgrade.
Most likely you will be able to activate over the internet.
If not, you will have no problem activating by telephone.

Hi Bert,

Of course you can reinstall, you will just need to reactivate. Follow these
steps to do a repair install which should preserve your data, settings, and
programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

You could also start the setup program from within Windows

I do not know who told you that but he is completely mistaken and you
should tell him so before he spreads this any further. Read up at
www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm and go ahead and reinstall - as many time
as you like on the same, or substantially the same, hardware. It will
have to be activated again, but you do that on the net in seconds just
like the first time
