Win Svr 2003 VPN behind a router

I am trying to configure a Windows Server 2003 as a VPN server behind LinkSys router/wireless hub. I am not a networking expert, I'm just learning... I cannot establish a VPN session with the server over the internet with this configuration. I am able to connect if the VPN server is directly connected to the internet and I can connect using a machine on my private network. When attempting to connect over the internet with the router in place, I get to the VPN server and I get logged in, but it immediately logs me off and drops the connection. In an effort to eliminate any port forwarding issues, I configured the VPN server as the DMZ Host on the router. I have disabled the Basic Firewall for now, and I have removed the Static Filters on the internet NIC. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
Which ports need to be opened for running VPN

A: PPTP VPN uses TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE); L2TP: UDP Port 1701;
IPSec: Pass IP protocol 50 and 51. Note: 47 is a protocol number and not
TCP port. The protocol name is GRE. It'll make a big difference when
configuring your firewall or router.
