win picture & fax viewer stopped working

pc crashed, when re-started picture & fax viewer wouldn't open any jpeg
files, or preview in thumbnail or filmstrip options. File types (under folder
options) still specifies "open with" win pic & fax viewer. Files will open
with other types of viewers.

You probably need to re-register the picture & fax viewer dll file

Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 %windir%/system32/shimgvw.dll
then click OK.
A dialog box appears to confirm that the registration process has succeeded. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Of course this makes you possibly open to the WMF exploit so it's probably a good thing that it doesn't open the MS Picture & Fax viewer, although some say that more steps then just turning off the MS Picture & Fax viewer are required to be safe.
