HAD A HARD DISK FAILURE. REBUILT SYSTEM ON NEW ONE. PRE
FAILURE, WIN. XP 2002 HAD ACCESS TO CDROM PHOTO FILES
THAT WERE WRITTEN USING WIN.ME.2000. NOW CAN'T READ
THEM. OTHER MACHINE ON LAN ALSO RUNS WIN.XP CAN READ
THEM. COPIED FILES TO MY MACHINE OVER LAN. STILL CAN'T
READ THEM. ACTUALLY CAUSES FATAL FAULT IN EXPLORER EVEN
TO TRY TO SEE THEIR PROPERTIES, OR TO OPEN A SUB-FOLDER.
THIS IS CRAZY, MUST BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THE FILE
SYSTEM IN MY XP.
ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS?
..

Shhhh not so loud we can hear you in the next
newsgroup (turn off all-caps)

No difference in file system, mabe bad hard drive wasn't
bad but IDE controller or cable is bad

Sorry 'bout the caps.
Problem is resolved somewhat.
Turns out that the CD had problems itself. The other
system being able to read was due to different hardware
tollerance to the error rates. Turns out that the files
read from the CD in the other system were largely OK but
about 10% were corrupted. All's well that ends, I
guess. There was no magic involved, and apparently this
problem would have surfaced even if the Hard Disk had not
died, causing me to reload windows XP.
hope this could help someone else...
