IF its your copy of XP pro why couldn't you install it?
If its not your copy of xpro then the end user license agreement (EULA) says
no, you can't. I have a feeling its the latter and Microsoft doesnt like to
share.

How are you having trouble installing XP Home SP(?)? if you get an error
message you should post it.

Hi,

Sure, just don't activate it if you don't plan on keeping it there. Just
boot the system from the disk, do not upgrade the existing installation, but
rather choose a clean installation without formatting.

He said STEP BY STEP -do you think its a good idea to get him to do a clean
install before asking him if he needs information on that drive...Hes asking
if he can install a fresh OS JUST to see if it will make the computer work!!

carmen - if you need the files on the drive do not install XP pro.
you will have to explain your OEM issue in more detail before anyone can
help you.
or just do a clean install and start over

A clean install to a new folder will not create any havoc, and is easily
undone. This will allow him/her to recover data from the Home installation
before starting fresh. The short steps I gave to start a clean install to a
new folder are sufficient for nearly anyone to figure it out, or are you
assuming that the user cannot follow setup prompts? I can't give a
step-by-step on how to fix the real problem because we don't know what it
is.

The user asked if he could use the Pro disk to see if the problem is with
the pc or the operating system. By installing to a clean folder it can be
shown that the problem is not hardware, but within the Home installation.
Unless I'm misinterpreting this, that's all the question was about.

By the way, in your diatribe you state that "if you need the files on the
drive do not install XP pro" - why not? Unless they deliberately ignore the
instruction to not format, whether they do an upgrade or a parallel
installation, all the files will remain intact and accessible. A parallel
install is a common method of recovering data files.

Hi,

I already mentioned that you can do a parallel installation of the Pro disk
to recover the files.

As to the actual problem, the best (and easiest) solution to a hal problem
is generally to do a repair installation to rebuild the file (hal.dll). For
this you would need the Home installation media. The "step-by-step" here
would depend greatly on what your manufacturer supplied for installation
media. If it's a generic retail disk, then boot the system with it and start
the installation routine. At the point where you choose the installation
destination, you should be given an opportunity to repair the existing
installation (it will be detected and you will be given that as an option).
Simple enough to select that and follow the prompts (you'll need your
product key). If it's a restore-type disk (essentially an image disk), then
repair may not be one of the options the manufacturer is allowing, most
simply wipe the slate clean and bring you back to factory state. This
results in the loss of all data currently on the drive, so the previously
mentioned temporary parallel installation would be the way to go to recover
data before going down this road. As you are only going to have the Pro
installation temporarily in this case, there is no need to activate it as
you will have 30 days to get the data recovered before it is required.

Rick: Sorry to hear you think I sounded abrasive. I was under the assumption
a clean install wipes out the user native folders (my documents etc) ....and
I didint think Carmen meant to "upgrade" his system, but assumed he meant to
install it over home OEM but its in my own regression to assume his level of
competance.... In windows home ive known people whove done this
inadvertantly, I never heard of parallel install before but thats why Im
here, to learn.

Guys you're confusing me! I am a regular non-technical person. I know pretty
much about computers but not that much.... I want to get the computer back in
working conditions with out changing alot, like my folders and everything in
them. I only need instruction in how to get it back, maybe how to get the
file "window root>\system32\hal.dll" fix so that I can get the computer
booting again? I assume that by copying or installing without formating my
win xp pro (retail version) over the factory or manufacture (emachine) win xp
home edition I will copy and fix the file("window root....") and keep all my
files intact and will be able to get to the computer(open windows)....
thank you....

Hi Brandon,

Perhaps a knee-jerk reaction on my part. By "clean", Brandon, I mean a fresh
install to a new folder, uncorrupted by the existing installation. "Clean"
does not have to mean a freshly formatted disk, but rather a "clean"
installation to an existing system - basically one that would be unaffected
by any problems with the existing installation. There is no reason to format
or otherwise, and this procedure is a fairly common method of recovering a
system.

What if you do not have enough space on the hd to do the new folder
installation? This is only a question. Just curious!

Hi,

That would be a problem, but if data recovery is the only concern then the
drive can be slaved in a working system or the data can be retrieved by
booting the system with BartPE (which can include a CD burning utility like
Nero to copy data to CD).
