Win Explorer not refreshing after changes

L

Lars

Can someone kindly advise me please. I have a standalone PC running
XP Pro with a single cable connection to the Net.

--------

I find that Windows Explorer is not refreshing after I have made file
changes to the right hand pane

For example I might rename files, move new files to the right hand
folder, create files there, etc. If I want to have these changed
names sorted then I have to press F5 for refresh.

(1) Is automatic refreshing the default behavior of Win Explorer?

(2) How can I re-establish automatic refreshing for Win Explorer?

(3) Is there a noticeable performance penalty if I use autorefresh?
As background info, I have no network so presumably Win Explorer
should not need to ALSO search for changes on a network.

Thank you.

This is a known problem in Windows XP. The fix is supposed to be to upgrade
to the latest Service Pack, and also you have to edit the registry as follows:

Follow these steps:
1. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
3. Type NoSimpleNetIDList, and then press ENTER.
4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
5. Type 1, and then click OK.

When I tried this - the Registry Editor would not allow me to create the new
DWORD value. I am still looking for a solution to this....let me know how
you make out.
