WIN 98SE to XP Professional

I currently have WIN98 SE on my computer and about to
install the full version of WIN XP professional. Do I have
to do this from a cleam system or will it upgrade my WIN
98SE OK?

This is the full version, not the upgrade version>

Clean install always trust me if you have ever upgraded you'll know what I
mean. And if you think you had problems with Win98 wait until you run an
upgrade.

It all depends on whether you have an "OEM full version" or
"retail full version". OEM versions cannot upgrade over an
existing Windows installation....only "retail versions" have this
capability. OEM versions must be installed on a freshly reformatted
drive or partition.

Before upgrading any existing Windows installation, it would be prudent to
run the Upgrade Advisor for Windows XP. This tool will report what hardware
or software may be incompatible with Windows XP. If you follow the Upgrade
Advisor's recommendations, you should not have any problem upgrading to
Windows XP.

If you fail to utilize the Upgrade Advisor, you may run into incompatibility issues.
Just inserting the Windows XP Upgrade CD in the CD Drive and selecting
"upgrade" is not going to give you the desired result. You must "prepare and
plan" your computer before beginning the upgrade process.

It is imperative that you have the latest BIOS update installed. Visit the support
website of the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard for instructions
on updating your computer's BIOS.

Also, physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware devices,
especially USB devices (not including your mouse, keyboard or
monitor). Uninstall any antivirus program, too!

I would agree with Mike, do a clean install but I would do one other thing
and that is to spend a few bucks and buy a new 2nd disk to install it on.
For less than $1 a gig you'll be glad you did. Install as the master and
move the 98 disk to the slave position.

Mike is 100% correct. I clean install is the best choice. It will save you a
lot of time and grief.

Provided it is a *retail* full version, it will do upgrades as well
(Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm). If it is one of the OEM
ones, sold with a nominal piece of hardware and marked 'for supply only
with a new computer' it will need the disk formatted first to install
clean
