Good thinking.

As for the rest of your post, it doesn't matter.

Hi, you could actually run vista (problably for $200) but for sure you can
upgrade to xp for $100.

Is your WinXP an upgrade or a full retail version?

You cannot uninstall an operating system from the operating system's add/remove. It is not an
option.
No OS was designed to commit suicide.
You will need a boot disk for Windows 98 to remove the Windows XP NTFS partition.
You can get the files to make one from www.bootdisk.com.

No you won't get a lot of hassle form Microsoft.
They won't even know you re-installed 98 and you may have to activate your XP on the new machine by
phone.

But your PC is a lot of over kill for a Windows 98 PC.
But if you just want a learning experience, have at it.
I would do some reading on the program called FDISK first and
I would make sure I had all of the Windows 98 drivers for the hardware.

Not quite true. If XP was installed as an upgrade and the OP elected to
save the old installation, and the file system still is FAT32, then there is
an entry in Add/Remove programs to remove XP and return to win98se.

Vista on a seven year old machine? Not something I'd try. :)

As noted elsewhere, get a boot disk, use it to run FDISK and delete all
existing partitions, then create a new one and, finally, install Win98. You
have no licensing issues, all you need are the boot disk (floppy), the Win98
CD and the appropriate Product Key. Since this machine has already had 98 on
it, I presume you have any necessary drivers already on hand. Most important
are any drivers you need to get to the internet (modem, NIC, etc.), so you
can then download anything else you need.

Sorry it took so long to reply to your post , this old man has some
health problems.
I dont think i have any 98se stuff on this old computer back when i
installed this XP Home i remove 98se even anything 98 in the registry and
formatted both hdd!s.
I have purchased a new nic card for this comp. , do you mean that i will
have to change the drivers in my cable modem to get online with win 98se?
I get confused about what 98se bootdisk to get , so one fine fellow says
that i can boot from my XP Home cd , format the drive thats got xp on it and
when its finshed
formating power off computer and put 98se cd and boot up and install , is
this true?
Thanks for your help

You won't need to do anything about your cable modem, but you will need
other drivers (for hardware) that work for Windows 98.

No, you can't do as was suggested, at least not as you describe it. Please
post to the following Windows 98 newsgroup for complete instructions. It's
not really appropriate here.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion

The above link should open using Outlook Express on your machine. It's a
much better way to access these newsgroups than the interface you're using
at microsoft.com.
