Win 2KSP3 Setup Fails to Detect or Install Mouse

S

Steve Sr.

This is a new install on virgin hardware and hard drives.

I started install from CD. I pressed F6 because I thought I had to
load SATA drivers but couldn't find the "txtsetup.oem" file that Setup
was asking for so I just continued.

Got to the first hardware selection screen and it said "unknown" for
keyboard and "no mouse" I have a known good PS/2 mouse and keyboard
plugged in. However, when I tried to change these two items Setup
wouldn't let me select either item. I tried to continue but Setup
wouldn't let me continue without a known keyboard that it wouldn't let
me change! Game #1 Over! Sheeesh!

New game. Start Setup again. This time I didn't bother with F6 since
it apparently wasn't needed. This time Setup completely bypassed the
hardware selection screen and continued the rest of the installation
without the mouse. Game #2 Over - No mouse.

I tried to fix this through Control Panel / Device Manager but there
didn't seem to be a way to add a pointing device or it was buried
under something else. Game #3 Over - Still no mouse.

What has Windows come to when it can't even properly auto detect a
keyboard and mouse? Is there a way to fix the existing installation?
Is there a way to prevent this from happening again if I have to
reinstall?

Thanks,

Steve

What kind of mouse/keyboard do you have?

Daniel,

The mouse is a Microsoft intellimouse Serial / PS/2 wheel mouse.

The keyboard is A Gateway 2000 Anykey PS/2 122 by Maxi-Switch.

Both Mouse and Keyboard function properly on other systems.

The motherboard is an Asus P4C800-E Dlx.

I did a little more playing with the system. I blew away the existing
no mouse system by deleting the partition. I then attempted to
reinstall from scratch both with and without pressing F6. Both times
Win 2K installed without a mouse.

Neither time did Setup put up the hardware modification screen so it
somehow remembered the previous incorrect parameters . The only way it
could do this is in CMOS. It looks like it is time to clear and
reconfigure the BIOS *again*

Does Win 2K support ACPI 2.0? Does anyone have a link to information
on the correct AMI BIOS settings for Win 2K? This is one of the areas
that might be causing some problems.

Thanks,

Steve

Windows 2000 supports ACPI -- I'd do a websearch on "Windows 2000"
"settings" and "AMI BIOS" ... I found a couple troubleshooting sites that
may help with your configuration issues.

Daniel,

Could you please be more specific about *which* trouble shooting sites
you were refering to? I loaded your suggested search terms into Google
and came up with over 1000 hits! After wasting several more hours I
really didn't learn anything that was helpful.

Are you saying that Microsoft can't trouble shoot installation issues
with their own software? I would think that Microsoft should have
detailed procedures to follow to find the root cause of this issue
instead of forcing customers into wasting time with the trial and many
errors approach. I have already wasted several days trying to make
this POS work when it should have only taken about an hour.

Regards,

Steve

I'm not familiar with your specific hardware configuration (this last
posting finally indicated that this is a POS).

I'm not suggesting that "Microsoft can't trouble shoot installation issues
with their own software." I was merely offering suggestions on where you
might find useful information. I'm sorry if the information I provided was
not useful.

You may wish to open a support incident (either web-based or phone-based)
with Microsoft for your specific situation.
