Hi
I wish to set up a home network in Windows 2000 from scratch,I have a 4
Port 10/100 PCI Router Card ,Realtech RTL8139D in one computer and a
Realtech RTL8139(A)PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor on the other and two more
computers later on.
I have connected the two computers together and ping both addresses and am
getting a timeout error. If I watch the led displays on both adaptors and
ping I can see the data leds flash both times so as far as I can see data
is getting to both computers.Any one have any Ideas ?

Also when both computers are communicating how do you set up win 2000 for
networking.
Thanks for any help....Nigel

Personally I think I'd pitch the router card and just buy a cheap router, an
8 port if you want to expand later or maybe a wireless / wired router.

This solves a lot of headaches IMHO but by all means wait for other
opinions.

With that setup everything else should just plug in and work and security
will be greater due to the router's firewall. Another issue is that the PC
with the router card must be always on, each time you do updates and restart
for example everything loses it's connection.

To connect two PC network cards together you need a "Crossover" cable, an
ordinary Cat 5 cable will not work. To connect to a router straight through
cables are needed.
