Win 2000 client in a Win 98 home network

Hello

I have read many posts on this interoperability issue and none fit my problem
exactly. I have at home a 4 computer "peer to peer network", all computers
running win 98, with no logins. I would like to connect my "work" computer to
this network while at home for file sharing, it uses Win 2K pro. I have a DSL
connection with a router and can surf the web from my work computer just fine
when its connected to the network.

However when I try to see the boxes in the home computer network from the win
2K box, I can see the home workgroup (with the default name "workgroup"), and
the clients name, but I get an error message saying "workgroup" is not
accesible, there are no login servers available to service the login request.

Simularly when I try to browse the win 2K box from the win 98 computer I can
see the domain name the work computer belongs to (at work) as well as the
client's name but get the error " <client name> is not accessible, no
permission to access the resource".

I have TCP/IP, Microsoft Family Login, File and Print sharing, and client for
Microsoft networks installed on the 98 computers. On the win 2000 box, I have
TCP/IP, File and Print sharing for micrsoft networks, and client for Microsoft
networks installed.

Can anybody shed any light on a way to get the boxes to communicate with each
other?

At this point, I care more about why, and making it work, on principal, than
actually using it for sharing files. Any help you could give would be
appreciated.

Thanks.

What kind of Router do you have? It should have a built
in switch to allow the computers to access each other.
Also, have you shared any folders?

Good question, I should have clarified that: I have a Linksys router with the
built in 4 port switch, and I can ping each box from the other (they are using
non routable DHCP addresses provided by the Linksys router). I have also
shared folders (read only) between the boxes. Note the Win 98 boxes do not use
a logon. I must logon to the win 2K box with my work login to get it to
boot up.

You shouldn't change the 'work' computer configuration, but you might change
the home workgroup environment.
Rename the home workgroup as the work domain. Reconfigure W98 clients to
login to the MS network and login with the 'work' name.
