Win 200 Pro networking problem

J

Jerry Adkins

I have four computers on a peer to peer network. There are two Win2K, one
WinME, and one Win98 computers. The WinME computer can copy files from one
of the Win2K computers, but not the other. The Win98 computer also works the
same.

The Win2K notebook gets an error message "The specified network name is no
longer available" whenever I try to browse the desktop Win2K computer.

The permissions are set on both Win2K computers, and the drives are shared

Any help would be greately appreciated.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers. Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is Netbios over
TCP/IP enabled (advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?

Thanks for your response.

I can ping the main computer from the notebook.
All computers have the same workgroup.
All user accounts exist on all computers.
File and printersharing is loaded. I can share the printer OK.
Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.

I can view the drives from the main computer using the notebook, but can not
browse any folders or files.
I know the main computer is OK, because another notebook can browse the
folders and files OK. The problem must be in the notebook in question.

Since I can share the printer of the main computer from the notebook, I know
the network card is working. I just can't browse the folders and files on
the main computer using the notebook. The other computers can browse the
files on the main computer OK though.

Is there any software available to diagnose this problem?

Which errormessage do you get?
Did you have a look at the ipconfig/all from all clients?

When I map network drive, I get the following error message:
"The specified network name is no longer available."

Yes, I did look at the ipconfig/all from all clients.
