will xp hard drive work as a slave on new vista system

i always have a problem with subject wording!
Here's my full question with background: I have (had) a windows xp
based system that worked great but the mobo took a shit. Since it had
served me well, i bought a new system to replace it with. The new
computer uses the vista os, not xp. Can i change the jumpers on the
(maxtor 60g) hard drive and install it as a slave drive (using ide
dual drive ribbon connector from the mobo to the dvd drive). I would
like to keep some files and programs so i can transfer them over to
the new hd. Also, should i install the old drive before or after i do
the first start up for the vista based pc? I hate the looks of the
vista os but that's life, keeps changing.
thanks in advance,

Walt

get Vista running first.

then connect the ide to the dvd ribbon as you say.

you will only be able to transfer data.

programs will have to be reloaded to the Vista drive via their original
discs or however you first installed them.

Thanks Lez, that's what i thought but i wasn't positive. I just want
to be able to transfer all my stored stuff (pic files, audio, etc.)
and some downloaded programs (zipped) that i can reload to the vista
os.
Do you know if vista will simply assign the new hardware a drive
letter? Will it interfere with the bios set up order?
I'm thinking it will just recognize it as a new storage drive and
everything will work as the original load did before it was
installed.
Thanks again,
Walt

yes

no, but install it after vist is up and running

um.......no if i am getting you, nothing that was 'installed' on the original drive
(programs) will work, However if you mean will the 'DATA' be intact. yes

load did before it was

make sure its a 80 conductor ribbon

The computer is a compaq sr2150nx (cheapy but seems fine for what we
use it for) and the dvd drive is connected to the mobo via an ide dual
drive ribbon (one unused i would assume for this sort of application
since it's located where a new drive can be installed). It's a new
machine so i'm pretty sure it's an 80 pin (opposed to a 40 pin) but
i'll take a closer look later.
Thanks.

You understood me correctly (which can be difficult at times), i
realize it's not a partitioned drive or anything like that, just a
storage device (like an thumb drive) with my old data inside, which is
what i need. It loaded fine before so i assume the info is still on
there like jpg files, mp3's, y'know, that sort of crap.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, i truly appreciate
it.

I bought a Compaq/HP SR2150NX on 1/31/07. It is the slowest, most
unreliable, and just poor quality machine that I have ever purchased.
I lodged a complaint with the Silicon Valley Better Business Bureau
regarding this machine. If you bought a SR2150NX, you should also
file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of Silicon Valley.
If enough people file, they will have to do something about their
horrid machine. I have owned a personal computer since my old Tandy
1000 HX and this computer is the worse purchase decision that I have
ever made. Fair warning!
