Whoa what? You are using (or did) an USR5686 modem?

Funny, isn't it. He's using a good modem, and
his results are marginal. That's the modem family
that can "dig signal out of dirt".

The fact that one OS gets good results, and the
other doesn't, suggests a difference in INIT strings.
But that's about all I can offer.

| I'm going to be moving my Win98 system to a much faster computer. It's
| another IBM machine, with similar Intel Processor and chipset, but
| rather than being 1.0Ghz, it's 3.0 ghz. This out to make Win98 run

|
| Anyhow, I know I can just transfer the Win98 harddrive to the new
| system, install a few drivers and it will run. (I've done this many

And you can do it.
But you have to go IBM website the get the 98 Drive for that PC

| But my current system has Win2000 dual boot. The D:
| partition is for Win2K.

Will it be on C:\ Now
So you have to put in your XP-CD and do a F8 key
to remake the Boot.INI it Win2000 C:\

But on win98 Edit the Boot.ini
Make win98 the default

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\="Windows 98"

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=C:\
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\="Windows 98"

If Works make TimeOut=0

Let's just say the two best OS's are Win98SE and WinXP. :)
And I could throw DOS in there, too, for good measure, so that makes three.
I am totally in agreement. I like 98 best, but I've gotten to like XP
in many ways, except I dont get much use out of it since I cant use it
for internet. And I have always liked Dos.

Windows 8 is horrid! Seems a lot of people feel that way.

Without getting all complicated, where do I find them in both Win98 and
in XP. I know this was explained, but I dont remember anymore. I forget
if they are in the registry or where....

I know if I go to CONTROL PANEL / MODEMS / GENERAL / PROPERTIES /
CONNECTIONS / ADVANCED, there is nothing in the "extra settings".

If Works make TimeOut=0

This all makes sense except setting the TimeOut=0.
There would not be enough time to ever click on the second OS. Thats
about the same as setting your desktop with a black background and black
text.

Timer that counts down in seconds, minutes, hours

Back up your Old Boot.ini
Save AS Boot.in_
First
Then Close Boot.in_
Re-open Boot.ini
And Edit it

"O" by the way;
When I running Two OS's
I Set it to 60 seconds
You know us Oklie's
Alway need a Good Minute

If 98 Start Automatically in 30 seconds

You do not need Timer
That counts down
If 2000 not there

And if you add your
Second OS Back with 98
On the New PC

Just Re-Save Boot.in_ as boot.ini
With it's counts down of 30 seconds

Who Knows
But you may
One day

You be able to get
A New 1tb Hard Drive
To go with it
That Old 32/64bit PC
With a Win 8 (64bit) OS
