Will not load user settings...

Please Help! I turn on the computer and it boots up but
when I click on my user icon it says loading user
preferances and then just sits there...Please Help!!!
 
Have you installed any new hardware or software recently ?
Was your computer properly shut down last time you used it
(start>turn off computer) ? do you have anti virus software
installed, and when was the last time you updated it ?
If you give us that information, we'll be better able to
solve your problem
