Widows Explorer question

If my memory serves me right, folder views in older versions of Explorer
were decoupled from system folder views. Specifically, I recall being
able to set up my Explorer view to show file details in all Explorer
folders while maintaining icon views in all other folders.

What I want to do is set up Explorer so that all folders show file
details, but only when using Explorer to view them. Simultaneously, I
want all other folder views -- such as desktop folders, control panel,
My Computer -- to display large icons only.

As it is now, all I seem to be able to do from the folder options dialog
is to set up all folders to look the same. I want them to be different
depending on whether I view them through Explorer or just on the desktop
-- something the old file manager. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then you may also need to check
"Remember each folder's view settings"

Thanks Dave, but I think you misunderstood what I'm trying to do. I did
what you suggested but that changed every folder to a the details view
of the current folder, both within Explorer and in my desktop folders. I
only wanted to see details when viewing a folder via Explorer. In all
other instances I want large icons only. I can't however seem to have it
both ways.

It doesn't work that way for me. I have Explorer|Tools|View|Details , then
Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View|Like Current Folder then I also check
Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View "Remember each folder's view settings"
Now all folders are "Details" with the exception of the ones I have changed
back to "Icons", "List" or whatever.

That was my point Dave. We have to manually change folders we don't want
to look like whatever setting selected in Explorer. With older
versions of Windows, any changes made to Explorer/File Manager views
only took effect when viewing folders within those two applications. The
'program groups' and system folders like Control Panel kept their icons.
I guess I'm just old fashioned.

Thanks for your help
