Widows Explorer is s.l.o.w.

I've got a pretty new (~1 month old) laptop, and I just started having
problems this morning with Windows Explorer. When I try to open a Word or
Excel file it takes quite a while (a minute or more) to open, and the
Explorer window sometimes says Not Responding briefly while trying to open
it. PDF files, on the other hand, open right up.

I'm also having problems closing Word documents sometimes. The document
itself will close, but a Word window will be open, but with nothing in it
(just grey), and when I close it I get a message telling me templates have
been changed and do I want to save them, etc. That started a week or so ago,
but is a minor problem compared with the slow opening of documents problem.

with "Word" closed , find the file named normal.dot and delete it ...Word
will recreate it next time you open it..

I looked around, and performed a search, and couldn't find that file. Any
idea where it would be?

I just discovered that Word files open very quickly if I open them from
within another Word document. It's just going from Windows Explorer to the
Word file that takes forever.

This problem can be caused by ACT!8. The preload setting needs to be
changed from -stayrunning to -preload in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
