Widescreen problem

Dear Windowers,

I have a question about widescreen laptop computers. I am currently on the
edge to buy a new laptop and have a question about the screens.

A friend of mine has a Sony Vaio laptop computer with 17" widescreen. He
says it is great for movies, but many internetsites (including MSN
hotmail.com) have problems showing words on a widescreen. At his computer the
letters/words are very small. The only way he can change this is to change
the resolution, but that dramatically decreases the quality of images on his
screen.

I would like to know if this is a common problem on widescreen laptops and
if this can be fixed.

Please let me know.

Best regards,
Wing

Widescreen would be of benefit if you are going to get the laptop with
Microsoft Media Centre Edition. Media Centre Edition (MCE) is a customized
version of Windows XP which is targeted to the TV/Cable/Satellite/DVD
"junkie". The widescreen is "optimized" for the widescreen DVD format. If
you do not want this, look for the regular screen.

I have a Toshiba with a 17" wide screen and run it the default resolution
of 1400xsomething - this provides a WIDE area, but is not any different an
aspect ratio than normal non-wide screen monitors have. If you buddy is
stretching the screen then he needs to consider using a different
resolution - 1024x768 is NOT a standard aspect ratio on 17" wide screen
LCD's.

Dear Windowers,
