Keeping aspect ratio on widescreen laptop when loweing resolution

Hey all,

I have a new Compaq Presario R3000 widescreen laptop -- i love it.
The native resolution is 1280x800 which is made for the widescreen.
However when i go down to 1024x768 or 800x600, the computer forces the
screen to fill the monitor, and the image is distorted/stretched. How
do i tell it to leave black around the edges for the lower
resolutions, and keep the screen in the proper aspect ratio?
