Changing aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3

A friend has just bought an ACER 17" laptop. The monitor aspect ratio is
set to 16:9 and all standard photos are stretched horizontally to fit.
They are grossly distorted. I tried setting the screen resolution to
800x600 which I thought would force a 4:3 aspect ratio. But it didn't
work. Even at a resultion of 800x600, the aspect ratio is still 16:9. I
have examined all the options in "Display" in "Control Panel" but found
nothing that forces a 4:3 aspect ratio.

How can I remedy the problem? Thanks.

What are you using to view the pictures, if you are trying to set them as
background then "centre" in the position setting.

First - change the monitor resolution to the monitor's native resolution.
As for the pictures - view them at "actual size" - not "stretch to fit". If
setting as a background image - choose "center".
