Zone alarm just said that Kaspersky Anti Virus was trying to act as a
server. Anyone know why?

I thought to get updates, a program should just need access to the
Internet. Acting as a server implies to me that it will "serve" things
on elsewhere.

I don't understand the need to act as a server as opposed to just
having access to the internet.

Well.....Kaspesky's servers do some controls before sending the update...
is your licence valid?
is your virus-definition-database ok? version? not altered by third
party(hacked)?
etc....

so your computer must provide some information.....doeing some serverwork..

I'm running the demo version of KAV personal , downloaded yesterday. I
intend to buy it if there are no problems.

I know Zone alarm advises that very few programs should ever need to
act as servers. They include P2P file sharing progs etc.

I'm using Kaspersky for a while now....never had problems..
upgrading xp with sp1 and last week sp2 didn't give any problems..
The support is great..

I decided to purchase Kaspersky after troubles with AVG and after running
three online-scanners...
Kaspersky on his first run (trial version) still found infected files (
have over 160G on 3 discs)
Now i'm feeling far more at ease...

Yes. Everything works OK without KAV being allowed to act as a server.
I have contacted KAV tech support and even they seem unable to tell me
why it needs to be a server.

KAV tech support have replied to 2 of my emails but still haven't
explained why. They seem either puzzled, or reluctant to say.

My understanding is that a server, "serves" files to others on a
network.

Here is the response from KAV

"Yes, KAV sometimes uses active FTP connection and needs to act as a
server. "

I don't know if this is good, bad or indifferent. Perhaps someone
does?

It's the way active FTP works. You computer sends out a connection
request and then opens a port. The ftp server receives your request and
then sends the file to your computer through the port your computer has
opened. KAV also uses HTTP connections as a backup to retrieve the
definitions, so you can safely prevent KAV from acting as a server and
you'll still receive your updates.
