Why would IE6 continuously go offline?

Over the last two days I have suddenly stopped being able to use my browser:
Pressing enter on a URL puts a check mark in WORK OFFLINE in the file menu
and the browser starts asking me if I want to connect to my dialup
connection (I have an always-on broadband connection). Unchecking the line
doesnt seem to improve things: I tried complaining to the cable-modem ISP
and they diagnosed this check mark: I removed it and the browser/connection
started working properly. But sometimes when I remove it all that happens is
that it reappears as soon as I press ENTER on trying to access the URL
again.

(Outlook Express seems to think it is offline most of the time as well
Outlook doesnt seem to suffer from this problem)

I did a virus check and it doesn't appear to be a virus. Is this a known
problem and/or does anyone know what is causing this?

Hi :- )

You don't what version of Windows you are using, or if you are cable or DSL.
There are a couple of things that can cause this. I recently had a very
similar problem with both situations. I use XP, have DSL, and a router.
Others may have suggestions for resolving the problem, but, I'll tell you
how I solved mine, as they may apply to either type of server: However,
they may not all work for you, or apply to your OS or server setup.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OE says you’re working off line but you’re not
As I said, I have a router. This is only if everything is set to static,
it won't work (I don't think)
well if it is set to auto:
I finally had to turn off the DNS and DCHP services.
DNS -
My Computer>Services and Applications>Services>DNS Client
Set Startup to Manual
Set Service Status to Stopped
DCHP -
My Computer>Services and Applications>Services>DCHP Client
Set Startup to Manual
Set Service Status to Stopped
and...
Prevent IE from disconnecting with DSL or cable connection:
Control Panel
Network and Dialup Connections
Local Area Connection
Properties
Configure
Power Management
Uncheck both boxes on this dialog sheet
and......
Power Management adjustments to stop connection loss
Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>uncheck “Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power.”
Hope this helps
Jan :)
It is possible that you've picked up a bug that attempts to hijack your ISP
settings. These set your ISP to a dial-up to an offshore entity. You end up
with a huge phone bill because the service will dial-up at odd times and
remain online for extended periods. If you have a modem installed either
remove it or disable it in Device Manager and disconnect any phone line you
have attached to your computer. Insure that the Connection Settings in IE are
set to Never Dial a Connection.
Thanks for the input guys: I suspect it isnt anything to do with the DNS
settings as the thing does work MOST of the time (and it is mysterious that
I sometimes get the problem with OE but not Outlookitself) but if it
persists, I suppose I will have to try that: Meanwhile the other idea is a
good one: I did try Norton Anti-virus but since I read your response
realised that I havent run AdAware or any Spyware software for a while
Sorry Jan let me correct my last response: I did do some googling before
posting and did find that the problem might be casued by and can be cured by
setting Startup to Manual in DNS Client and then Setting Service Status
to Stopped
My problem was that for some reason in XP Pro I could never figure out how
to do this (HELP tells you about it but doesnt tell you how to do this) or
(as you suggest) even how to GET TO Services and Applications in My
Computer. I cant see it by doubleclicking, right clicking or in the file
menu
There are some events that can occur that are not covered in the Help files.
I sometimes find that the Help files offer nothing that relates to my
problem, however, I do some homework and try to figure it out, or do like
you did, go to the newsgroups or forums for assistance. The fact that you
were able to find the answer by doing a Google search is testament to
someone having the same problem, and someone giving of their own time to try
and help find an answer. :)
Prevent IE from disconnecting with DSL or cable connection:
Terribly sorry if this seems exceptionally annoying but this problem has
intermittently persisted and I finally discovered how to do this but it
didn't help and the check mark keeps coming back and the connection keeps
being lost: I CAN uncheck it and sometimes it does make the connection
return for one ENTER of the URL but it never retains the connection for any
length of time
Needless to say the Outlook connection has got worse and worse in this
connection respect and doesn't now work at all
