Why won't Word 2003 start up?

When I open Word 2003, the only thing I see is the flash page. Then it
freezes up and I have to turn the power off and re-start the computer to
clear the screen.

All other applications seem to work fine.

I've tried un-installing and then re-installing Microsoft Office. After I
did that, I could start Word 2003 in safe mode. The following day I was back
to the same problem.
