Why won't my laptop show the login icons at start-up?

Whenever I start up my computer, the Vista welcome screen comes up as usual,
with the ease of access button in one corner and the shut down options in the
other, but the user names and icons don't come up. Everything is normal
except for their absence. How could I fix this?

Start/Run
Type "control userpasswords2" ENTER
Place a check by "Users must enter..."
click OK.

Can you get into Safe Mode? Press the F8 key repeatedly when you start your
computer? Look in Control Panel > User Accounts to see what's listed. If
it doesn't look good, try to create a new account.
