I have almost reached the last straw with Vista stupidity.

Enable file sharing in the Network dialogs. Great, time to share files and
see computers.

Does it work? Of course not!!! Why? Why? Why?

Because you forgot to go into network adapters and in the properties dialog,
enable File and Print Sharing.

Stupid, stupid, stupid design!!!!

If the Network file sharing enabling does not do it all, TELL US!!!! ,
Microsoft. At least we won't waste hours trying to solve your programming
oversight.

Such a simple issue that will (and does) cause endless hours of frustration
from users. I know Vista is still Beta but this issue is so obvious...
please, fix it.

All you had to do is to open Vista's "Help and Support"
and type 'file sharing' in the search box to find the
answer.

....All you had to do... nice answer, Carey, after the fact, Monday Morning
Qback. How was I to even know there was a Vista problem?? I had enabled file
sharing... what else need I do?? Please, be realistic in your replies. I'm
not new to Windows OSs having installed many networks since Win3.11. I feel
sorry for those users who have not the experience to drill into Network
Adapters to finally find the real cause of the problem. And judging from the
posts in Networking, I am not alone.

with my assessment of enabling file sharing as presented? I have yet to hear
that my criticism is not warranted... please feel free to correct me. 20-20
hindsight is wonderful. But you need to think like someone who hasn't a
clue, not the pro(?) that you appear to be.

You need to realize somethng here.....that for people that claim Vista is
great and the best OS ever and would bend over for Vista if it so
desired, any issue anyone else has, it's their own fault.

So that is why you got the replies saying so. Don't waste any more time
with that, now that it's working.

Not that it means anything, but I agree with you. It IS a stupid design,
and meant to protect you from yourself, or that is what MS won't say.

Why would it allow you to set up shares if file-sharing is not enabled on
any NIC ? It cuold at least give you a message box saying, 'You have set
up file-sharing on drive c. Before you can begin to share files, you must
enable file-sharing on you netwrk interface first.'

But that would make too much sense.

Please elaborate, Robert? You set up file sharing and you shared files... or
not? Did you have a network and were able to share files withoug addressing
the NIC properties to allow sharing? Maybe you have a different, more
thoughtful version, of Vista. Please tell us more...

Well idiot Mick probably thinks file sharing means popping round next
door with a floppy... his computer is really an Etch a Sketch with
"Vista" written in felt tip pen on the screen...

(Now watch the self opinionated moron complain about HIM being insulted
in a newsgroup

All software has errors but one expects MS to be the BEST, since they
continually advertise themselves as such, yet most of the problems with
Vista are once again repeats of the same silly problems that MUST have
been obvious during very early testing... mind you when you see the
caliber of most of the arrogant "Your own fault" Fanboys here you can
understand how such blatantly obvious errors went unnoticed The kind
of thing described by John (The OP I think) is typical of a product that
was rushed out the door improperly documented.

MS operating systems are supposed to be "Easy" to use so that the non
expert can get around, come here and the non expert is concerned as
stupid for expecting MS to try and live up to that.

I'm glad you figured it out.
Vista claims improved security, all I see is the ignition switch moved to
the trunk, the blinker switch on the back of the headrest and the bright/dim
switch in the glovebox.
Maybe that makes it harder to steal, but it doesn't make it user friendly.
All the claims of improved security are a joke from my perspective.
The hackers already have workarounds and common users are left dealing with
a messed up design.
UAC conditions people to click through the prompts as quickly as possible.
Do you want to install spyware and ID Theft.exe?
"Oh Damn, another one of those damn prompts...<click>YES (get off my screen
you damn thing)"

I can make it work, but I ask the same question every time I have to jump
through new (and unnecessary) hoops to make something work...

A step backwards is what I see.
I really expected a leap forward when I started testing Vista, but the
longer BETA went on, the more disappointed I was.
Bt the time they announced the RTM, I was totally disgusted and I have yet
to see any effort to correct the obvious design flaws.
