File Sharing from XP to Vista Ultimate

G

Guest

I have been unable to access my shared files from my home's XP machines to my
Vista Ultimate machine. On the Vista machine, I have enabled the guest
account, enabled all of the file sharing, enabled sharing to "everyone,"
"Guest," and anything else I could find, and made sure sharing was enabled on
the folders I wanted shared. Password protection is disabled. I am able to
access files on my XP machines from my Vista machine, but not the reverse.
The name of the network is consistent on all of the machines. I have tried
everything I have found written in these groups to no avail. I have been
working on this for days! Does anyone have any ideas for me?

what happens if you type in the windows explorer window the following:

\\COMPUTERNAME

where computer name is the name of the vista computer?

You should see some things there, try it from the xp machine and try it
again from the vista machine (yes to see if it sees itself).

Do you have some firewall that may be blocking something?
In vista it has a yello information bar at some point that asks you if you
want to use autodiscovery..
did you do that?

is this a newtwork with static IP addresses or do you have a router that
uses DHCP?

Thank you so much for your response.

When I go to my XP SP2 computer and try to type in \\COMPUTERNAME (where the
COMPUTERNAME is the name of my Vista Computer) I get a message saying that
that name cannot be found on this server, although there is a graphic
representation of my Vista computer sitting right there in the window. Of
course, when I click on the Vista computer, I am told I "may not have
permission...."

My router is a Netgear router using DHCP with dynamic IP addresses.

I am only using the Windows Firewall right now, and I have enabled "File and
Print Sharing" in the advanced properties of the Windows Firewall.

As far as the "Win HTTP Web Proxy Autoproxy Discovery" service, when I check
in Windows Services, I see it is "running."

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I asked you to do the same \\computername on the actual vista machine to see
if it "sees" itself and its shares...

does it see its own shared folders? This will show you if vista itself is
the culprit.

from what I an percieving vista has not shared its files correctly...

What steps did you take to share files?

when you first joined a network with vista it had 3 options, home, work, and
public (I think)

which one did you chose?

I would also suggest you make a new post in the following 2 HIGHLITED
newsgroups SEE SCREENSHOT

Crosspost the question and give the most details you can.. perhaps you will
get better help that way

I am able to view my own files on my Vista computer from the same Vista
computer with no problem.

As far as I can tell regarding the type of network, there are only "Public"
and "Private" options. Mine is set to Private as per the many directions I
have read.

I will look into reposting my questions on the groups you have indicated.
Actually, I have never posted questions here in the 12 years I have worked
with computers.

I am beginning to regret my Vista Ultimate upgrade. I had XP (and all of
the previous operating systems back to OS2) down pat.

Thank you

well it does seem strange...

I personaly dont use dhcp on my router, I have disabled it, and give static
IP addresses
to the machines... that way I can manually open ports in the router...

anyway.. I am sure people will help you on those 2 newsgroups... its not bad
asking for help....

If you have seen my posts in this newsgroup... I have bashed vista like no
other human on this planet..
because of a huge number of problems that could have been avoided....

I personally cannot work on vista! its to slow and programs show strange
behaviour.. my main machine still runs XP.

I have networked my xp and vista computers with no problem... but I did
select the "home" option when I first started vista.... and again.. I use
static IP's

Let's back up a step.
1. Guest account on the Vista machine
- did you enable or create a guest account as a logon id
or
- did you select a Vista folder(not the public), right click, scroll to properties, select sharing, click on share folder and in the dialog box type in the word Guest(its not present as a selection).
or
- did you access the permissions tab and enable permissions on one of the User\Guest options assigned to your Vista computer's name(computer name is different than logon name)

2. Does the XP Machine have a password for logon?

3. Does the XP machine and Vista machine have the same logon id and password ?

Easiest way I've found is to "create a USER account" on the XP machines
with the same name & password you're using on your Vista machine. Then logon
to the XP machines with the new ID, make sure you've "mapped" whatever you
need to access, and you should be done.

I was unable to connect my Vista and XP home machines, until I ENABLED
password protection on both machines. Using the same login and password,
communication between them worked immediately.

Yes, this is required. Well, you don't have to use the same login and
password on both, but they do need an account and password to work.

I had the same problem. With a little probing (whaddaya know, windows vista help actualy....helped)

Get to your run command and type MMC.exe.
Click File - open
go to Windows/system32/secpol.msc
set 'Local Policies/Security Options/Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only' to diabled.

should fix yer problem.
