Why some of us are concerned about Vista

J

Justin

Actually, that will be our worse nightmare! Too many ignorant reviewers are
going to load Vista with XP drivers or some other nonsense then report how
crappy Vista runs.

People need to make sure they are reading from a RESPECTABLE source!

This is correct. Our whole media centre (MythTV) setup is analogue
(analogue cable, analogue TV, line in connections from TV to MythTV
machine, older analogue TV tuner card) and we have no DRM issues with
anything.

None at all and certainly not for anywhere near $1000.
Not even half that figure even if you use the retail cost of Vista
Ultimate full and not upgrade.

OK how about Vista retail ($399) plus Intel or Asus ($150) mobo new video
card minimum
nvidia 6800 ($200) gt maybe? Oh and some of the new boards only have sata
hookups so
now optical ide drives are obsolete so ($100) two new drives there. Now
that's $850 and
those aren't the top of the line (especially video card) so I don't think my
figure is ridiculous by any means. Sorry I forgot 2 gigs of memory, there's
$1000 for ya.

I have many friends who have what I call "crap" systems and yes they will
have spend some cash
to upgrade and most say they wont. I told em you can get an HP with Athlon
64 brand for $800
so that is cheaper but like most things in life you get what you pay for. I
hope this holds true
for Vista too.

I'm guessing TK's PC needs major surgery. Maybe his PC wont make it? Who
get's it's peripherals?

I already loaded it if you bother to read the damn posts but took it off due
to
crappy drivers 3rd week of december. Hoping that will change.
My system is not top of the line but it will run Vista for sure.

Asus P4P800 mobo
2 gigs PC3200 memory (corsair)
Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT video
Soundblaster X-FI Pro Elite
2 Seagate HDDs
1 Quantum HDD
1 Maxtor HDD
1 External WD HDD

I use the box above to DJ with and it works Great with XP. I hope I have as
much control in Vista.
I use Directshow filter manager to prioritize my audio and video codecs and
want to be able to do
that in Vista.

P.S. I haven't seen the mac commercial and don't care about it. I hate macs
because there
is a true monopoly. Imagine if MS tried to control all hardware lol.

My ASUS Z92T laptop scored, at average, 4.6 on Vista Ultimate when all
my drivers weren’t working. Now we must remember how old the
Vista Betas are and that most major manufacturers will be releasing
supported Hardware Drivers to the public on release. There is also the
fact that there is no way to stop Piracy, even if Microsoft thinks they
can. Windows XP Professional / Home will HAVE to still be supported by
Microsoft as some major corporations still use the older Operating
Systems because migrating would raise the point of having to re-write
all security and Operating System modifications.

What’s the point of transferring to Vista when it’s obvious
that Hackers, Devs and Scripters can easily create those nasties that
Windows XP gets? Longhorn / Vista still uses the i386 architecture and
still uses a Registry for all applications. Some people are dumb enough
to run anything they download without checking it (I don’t’
really care as I own two Volume License copies of XP Pro). It’s
all up to choice, as Microsoft is getting close to breaching Privacy
with their automatic hardware logs being sent out and who knows what
else it’s sending out.

Honestly, I got Vista working fine on my old computer and it sped up
all my Games, applications and functionality. Where as my laptop, with
it’s newer hardware, couldn’t install any of the hardware
(x64 Vista Beta 2 :p ) and slowed down slightly compared to my old
comp.

Laptop Specs Scored 4.6 (Average):
-AMD Turion64 X2 Dual Core TL-52 – 4.7
- 1GB DDR2 (Soon to be 2gb) – 4.4
-NVidia® GeForce Go 7600 256MB Memory - 1.0
-100GB 5400rpm HDD – 4.5

Comp Specs Scored 3.0 (Average):
-AMD Sempron 2800+
-1gb DDR (400MHz Clock)

I’m stuck between asking for a 64-bit Vista Business Upgrade or a
32-bit as the company giving the Express Upgrades to Vista Capable
laptops are only giving one or the other. That doesn’t mean
I’m going to upgrade, I just want a copy of Vista in hand. The
corporation I work for just recieved a Copy of Vista Business Upgrade
yesterday, and I'm really tempted to test it out.

If you feel with all your soul, not to upgrade to Vista, then
don’t.

(This post isn't flame bait!)

Cool but what's up with all the ’ ???

I never said no one will need to spend $1000 if they decide the want Vista.
But you said "fact" and I asked for your source.
I also know many examples where little to no cost is necessary to upgrade to
Vista.
Are you really saying you believe many may need to spend $1000 in order to
run Vista?
If so, I can agree with that, but many will not as my computer is an
example.
But if you think it is a fact the average user needs to spend $1000 to run
Vista, I want a source for that fact.
Neither you nor me know enough people to be statistically relevant to
represent the population as a whole.

It really seems like we may agree.

J

Justin

So your "average" does even include you? After looking at your specs, trust
me, you ARE average (aside from your sound card).

J

Justin

You are totally talking out your rear!

You are mixing too many different scenarios. You obviously gave this NO
thought at all.

1. You are talking about people UPGRADING to Vista. Which means they
ALREADY have a computer and are ALREADY running Windows. You claim Vista
costs $399. YOU ARE WRONG!!! The upgrade pricing will run, $99, $159 or
$259. Your ASSumption that the average person will buy Ultimate is
completely bogus.

2. There is NO reason AT ALL for the average person to replace their
mainboard!!! To say as such is utterly ridiculous. Did the average person
on the beta have to upgrade their machine? NO! I will certainly admit the
average person may "want" to upgrade their memory but that's about it.

3. You will be able to buy a computer for $700 with Vista installed and
working. That alone proves just how full of "crap" you are with your
required $1,000 upgrade for Vista.

"Oh and some of the new boards only have sata hookups so now optical ide
drives are obsolete so ($100) two new drives there"

What the hell kind of ignorance is this? The average machine only has ONE.
You are talking about a COUPLE boards. Why do you ASSume everyone upgrading
to Vista would even buy such a board? There is 100% NO REASON for anyone to
go this route. This is more of that "rear" talk I talking about above.

If your system is so OLD and/or so HORRIBLE that you need to upgrade your
entire system for Vista then odds are it doesn't run XP either.

Now do everyone a favor and quit spreading LIES about Vista. People come
here for REAL information and don't need to have to filter through all the
BS propaganda you trolls spread.

Forgot to post 3.2 Ghz P4E HT chip.
And that is NOT the average of ALL home pcs out there.( except pcs purchased
in last 6 months)
Maybe all your friends have Super pcs but most people I know don't.
Ohh and if makes ytou feel better that souncard runs to a behringer 16
channel mixer
to a Crown XTi 2000 CLASS I amp 800 watts X2@4 ohms to JBL JBX 125 Quasi 3
way dual
15" subwoofers and a JBL studio series 15" sub.
So now maybe you have a clue as to what I use my pc for and honestly R4 runs
great
with my current setup. I use Winamp mainly because of the seperate windows.
WMP
apparently will never do that and Power dvd 7 is all in one now.

Off topic rant: Does anyone else notice what a shitty job is done on the
audio
of most MUSIC dvds? I have to take and rip the videos from the dvd and
rework the
audio so I can use the videos to DJ.

You are right you can buy all in one systems for less but I was talking
a good solid setup that I can do audio/video work I need to do.
Sorry I didn't make that point clear, my fault.

It will cost me more than $1000 to build my system I'm sure.
I want to be able to work with HD video though.

I am A DJ with a database of 50,000 songs, 10,000 Karaoke titles and
about 5,000 Music Videos. I've had to rework the audio in most of the
videos.
Many were downloaded videos but what amazes me is that I have to rework the
audio on most music dvds I buy. Apparently most audio engineers don't have
the
knack for working with Dolby. I make it 2 channel for DJ purposes anyway.

Hey the average machine has 2 optical drives.Would you buy a PC for $700
with Vista loaded? Then you must be a lite ignorant user. I actually do
video/audio work with my rig.
Now $399 is the highest So I'll kiss your ASS on that one.

J

Justin

Oh brother! Now you're going off about a specific machine that requires
heavy processing power. How exactly is this the "average person"?

Do you or do you not already have a machine that can handle your
requirements?

If you do then you DO NOT need to spend $1,000+ to upgrade to Vista.

If you do not then you are NOT spending $1,000+ to upgrade to Vista, you are
spending $1,000+ for OTHER needs.

J

Justin

You completely failed to address 1, 2 and 3. Debate over.

Now on to new info:

"Hey the average machine has 2 optical drives."
False!

"Would you buy a PC for $700 with Vista loaded?"
Yup! Lots of friends and family are ready to update their old machines
(Originally installed with Win98).

"Then you must be a lite ignorant user."
Your level of intelligence is proving to be rather low. How does someone
who does not need a lot of processing power translate to ignorance? How
does a FACT about what people are able to buy and being 100% relevant to
this conversation translate to what YOU would or would not buy when
discussing the AVERAGE person?

"I actually do video/audio work with my rig."
I seriously doubt anyone cares. That has nothing to do with what the
AVERAGE person needs to do to run Vista.

"Now $399 is the highest"
Yes, it's the highest. What's your point? Other then that fact that you
have none. No one has to upgrade with the full retail version of Vista. If
your argument is about the cost of UPGRADING then you need to keep the basis
of your information locked to the UPGRADE pricing.

"So I'll kiss your ASS on that one."
The only persons ASS you are kicking is your own.

No, you were a bit more forceful the way you said it:

"Is MS mentioning the fact that upgrading to vista will probably cost
$1000 on average when
you figure cost of Vista plus upgrading hardware."
Why would they mention such fiction?
Where do you get this ridiculous figure?"
