Why Outlook saves attachments without extension

If I save attachments from e-mails and I try opening them afterwards from
windows explorer, I must first add the extension in the documents name (e.g.
add [.doc]). I have never had this problem with Outlook (or with Explorer)
before.
 
Version of Outlook and windows? I've seen it happen with Vista and Outlook
2007 when hide extensions was enabled. I thought it was fixed by an
update - or enabled show extensions in windows.
