Why no codec updates for Media Player (QuickTime has all the new ones for free)

L

Lars-Erik Østerud

Why is there no free downloades for 3GP, AMR, H.264 etc for Windows
Media Player? Alle sites I find has condecs, but they are not free.

QuickTime has them all included in the free download version :-(

Tries installing the latest "Storm" codecs for Media Player, but
that only causes a crash each time I try to play a file :-(((

Anyone know where to get working 3GP, AMR and G.264 condect for WMP?

Install QuickTime to get the codec's. You don't have to use the program. The
installed codec's should be usable by all media programs.

But it isn't. I can playback 3GP and AMR files on QuickTime, but in
Media Player if I force 3GP to open there there is no sound, and
sometimes the image is upside down :) AMR files won't play :-(

Nokia PC Suite installs the codec, but removes them when it's
uninstalled (anyone know how to just install the codecs :)

Start>>Control Panel>>Sounds and Audio Devices>>
Hardware>>Video Codecs>>Properties>>Properties

Are the relevant codecs listed there?

If so, then miserable POS WMP is broken yet again, or, my personal
theory, has been written to NOT recognize certain CODEC's
in order to assure MS's World Domination of Multimedia Formats.

If they're listed, try a third party player - Media Player Classic
comes to mind:

Please cut that MS world domination mantra, it's childish, unrelated and non
constructive.
WMP reads all directshow compliant codecs that you install, this means that
as long as you write it following the standard it will work.

On the other side, both quicktime and realmedia are closed standards and
they don't have directshow compliant codecs.
Although you can use the "alternative" for both codecs that's not something
supported and the legality of the thing is quite dubious.

Last, but not least please PLEASE do not install codec packs, it's the
quickest way to kill WMP and get spyware included.

But then MS had to release widly used codecs for WMP (like 3GP and
AMR), when they don't people use QuickTime or install Codec packs!

Is there a way to copy this list?
What codecs should I look for for 3GP and AMR?

Also AMR should be a audio codec right?

You know, irony works quite bad online...
I've seen too many flamewars start from stuff like that so I tend to refrain
form that...

Anyways, there's a few guys at the www.wmwiki.com forums that are trying to
create a WMP friendly codec pack, so far it works fine with most codecs but
you can post suggestions if you think there are missing ones...

You know Zarax you are absolutely right about this, "PLEASE do not install
codec packs." Not even the Microsoft ones for Windows Media Player 6.4 are
any good. Some codecs must be installed like the DivX codecs and XViD but
other than that they should be installed as stand alone and NOT from codec
packs.
