Why is word crashing and restarting, asking to start in safe mode.

It's become common practice for word to crash on me but today it's asking to
restart in safe mode. Please advise

Word, particularly version 2003, is quite stable and should not be crashing
regularly. The link provided by Doug explains how to get round the issues
that cause the crashes, but in addition any time Word crashes it leaves a
raft of files scattered around the hard drive and these should be removed to
prevent further problems. See
