why is the equation add in greyed out in Word 2007?

I just installed Office 2007 and the Insert Equation function is greyed out.
I have reinstalled the add-in and it still does not work.

what add-in?

The new equation function only works when the document is in native 2007
mode, i.e., not if you work in the compatibility mode.
