Why is power setting resetting itself to standby mode?

My boss just recently asked me to stop the standby mode after 25 minutes
while his laptop was in ac mode. I simply went into the control panel, then
into the power options, and set the standby mode to never. I hit apply, and
clicked OK. That was yesterday. Today my boss called me, and mentioned that
everything is still like it was yesterday. Well, I asked one of my friends
to go into his office and look at the settings. Indeed, everything was back
to the way it was yesterday before I made the change. There are no admin
rights on this laptop, at least I don't think so, after all, he is the boss
:-) Any help in this matter would be appreciated...............Peter

Hello Peter,
Were you logged in with your account or with your Manager's account?
Power settings are per-user not per machine, so depending on who was logged
in depends on who is controlling the power settings.
Some Power Settings require Administrator rights to be changed.
Thanks,

Thank you very much Darrell. I gave that some thought as well. I was lazy,
and assumed that since he is the boss of our big company, and he had no
logon, and I only turned it on, that he had admin rights. Was that a bad
assumption? I don't think that our IT guy would not give the boss admin
rights. BTW, The machine was shut down, it was not in hibernation mode or
anything like that. Is there another method of shutting down the computer,
that I may be unaware off?, by way of the BIOS maybe, or a bad battery, or
power supply. To me it was a simple answer, the darn setting went back to
its original default. Is it possible that an automatic "windows update" will
set that power setting back to a certain default? Again, I appreciate any
other advise or hints or trouble shooting advise you can give
me.........Peter

If there is a vendor's power management applet running in the startup
bar, try setting the power modes from it rather than the OS applet.
Sometimes the vendor's applets have priority over the settings.

Great advise, I will check that ASAP Many thanks...............Peter

Many thanks Quaoar, that did it, I found the Sony power setting, like you
suggested, and I was able to adjust it to the setting my boss wanted. It
also stayed there now. I appreciate your help a lot.............Peter
