Sleep Mode

Skye

Hi Guys,
When I press the sleep button on the keyboard only the screen goes into
standby mode, the PC no longer does. I've checked in the Power Options panel
and everything is the same as before. I've read through the problems others
are having with standby mode but can't see my problem there. Any ideas?
Cheers.

Skye,

The shortcut key (macro) has changed somehow. Maybe you can program it back
to default

Skye,
How do you know it is just turning the monitor off and not going
into standby mode?

What are the symptoms that make you believe this is what is happening?

If you are sure, and you have checked that it does indeed specify 'Stand
by ' in the box marked 'When I press the sleep button on my computer'
under the 'Advanced' tab on the 'Power Options' control panel. Then, I
would deliberately set this option to 'Shut down' then use the button to
shut your computer off. Then, re-start your computer and set the option
*back* to 'Stand by'.

This will probably clear what is happening, by defining it to something
else and then setting it back again.

But, make sure that you have the right button defined; i.e. the
'Sleep' button and not the 'Power' button!

Tim, When I press the sleep button on the keyboard the monitor says that the
system is going into standby and then the screen turns off but the PC is
still running. Before this, the PC fans etc would shut down too and all went
quiet.

I have already tried the other alternative you mentioned but it didn't solve
the problem. As mentioned in the previous posting, the sleep key must be
working but it still doesn't shut off the tower.

I have another XP PC and have checked all the settings against this one,
they are all the same and that one is working OK. What could have changed to
prevent it going to sleep.

I have been doing some [desperate] research on this and come up with not
allot more than I had to start with!

Are you sure (he says hopefully) that your PC is definitely not in
standby mode?

Sometimes the fans do stay on in standby mode, but the power light
either goes out or turns a different colour.

Hard-drives are powered=down in standby mode - do you hear the
[hard-drives] start spinning again - or do they never stop, even when
you attempt going into 'standby' mode?

The only advice I have uncovered so-far is from Kelly's Corner :

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm

....but what you want is really some sort of diagnostic tool.

I will keep searching on this and get back to you if I find anything
better.

But check out the link anyway, there may be something there that
'strikes a chord' with your particular problem.

Get a copy of the Microsoft "dumppo" utility, and see what it says.

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/products/Oemtest/v1.1/WOSTest/Tools/Acpi/dumppo.exe

Open an MSDOS window (command prompt) and run dumppo.exe from there.

dumppo.exe admin cap

That will list the capabilities of the PC as it currently stands.
You can do this, to redirect the text output to a file.

dumppo.exe admin cap > output.txt

In this example, you can see my "System states" include
S1 and S3. S1 is the "standby that leaves the fans running".
+12V runs the fans and +12V runs the processor, so if the
fans are spinning, the processor is also receiving power.
S1 is a relatively high power state, and the main saving
is from blanking the monitor.

S3 is "Standby Suspend To RAM", where only the RAM is
running, and it is powered by the +5VSB standby supply.
The fans can be off in that case, and the RAM still receives
power. The switch on the back of the computer, must remain
in the ON position, for the +5VSB supply to continue.

Start with that test, and see what it reports. Sometimes
resetting the BIOS can screw up the ACPI settings, such
as the standby choice ("S1", "S3", "S1&S3"). And on some
motherboards, all it requires is a detected crash, to
cause the BIOS to reset itself.

Thanks so much for your help. In the meantime I've been busy backing up all
my work in order to do a System Restore to the time when I recall it was
working OK (over a week ago). I am now pleased to say it's resolved the
problem so will never know what caused it.
Thanks again.

Just to open up the issue again, I discovered the problem was caused by my
new laser mouse as it started preventing sleep mode of the tower again within
a few minutes so I plugged my old mouse back in and no problem since.
My old mouse has a USB which I plug into a converter and then plug it into a
PS2 socket. Why won't my new mouse do the same, it only works in a USB socket?

Skye,
Plenty of mice do not work with a PS2 converter.

In fact, I bought one [PS2 converter] in the hopes of connecting my
current USB mouse to the PS2 port to free up a spare USB port, but it
also did not work.

Since then, every mouse I have tried with it has not worked and have yet
to come across a mouse that it does work with.

It may be a regional thing, with mice that are manufactured here in
jolly ol' blighty being of the same incompatible type, or something.

But, on the whole, I think you were lucky to have a mouse that worked
with the PS2 converter in the first place.

Really glad to hear that your power [stand by] issue has been sorted out
though.

Looks like all the latest mice don't work with a PS2 converter, that's
something I've now found out. I also wanted to keep my USB ports free but as
the old mouse has "had it" (5 years old, they don't make them like that
nowadays) I've had to waste a precious USB port on the new one.
For everyone's information who might have the "sleep mode" problem, although
I found out it was caused by the new mouse, it later transpired that if I
plugged it into a different USB port it entered sleep mode with no problem.
Strange!!

Thanks Tim for your help anyway.
